A Love Story Just Begging To Be Set Free
Les from Dublin, 02 Jun 2008
About half an hour from the end of this movie, Tim Roth looks into the camera and says, "I should have understood this from the beginning". At that point I was convinced that he must have been reading my mind! It is beautifully shot - as you might expect from the Zoetrope stable - and well acted; but maybe Copolla had bitten off more than he could chew. What came through to me was a potentially exquisite, and timeless, love story that got trapped in a muddled, and often incomprehensible plot.

Works on some levels and not on others

A very unusual film that works on some levels and not on others. It has elements of science fiction, with a very stylized approach to filming. Coppola tries to address a number of complex philosophical issues, but these do not seem to hang together very coherently. However, it is well scripted and acted, particularly by Roth. An interesting film which did keep my interest throughout, but which will not appeal to everyone.
interesting mess

strange, ambitious, dull, fascinating. Coppola trying to find his film-making feet again.
Really Good movie!
