Not for block-buster fans!

This movie is not for those looking for all-action, but will definitely reward those keen on watching a character-driven, moving human story. It has an indie-movie feel but stars 2 big Hollywood names. It's not exactly a feel-good movie so probably not a date movie. Loved the performances by Philip Seymour Hoffman and Laura Linney, both playing characters with lots of flaws yet the viewer will empathize with their trials and tribulations.

Harsh reality.

A movie many people will not go out of their way to see because of the subject matter on show. The Savages shows us two siblings, neither of whom have made much of their lives, as they must come together and cope when their ailing father must be sent into a hospice. Cracking performances from the two leads set this apart from yer standard 'dark family drama' and, so long as you don't mind the subject, then this is a v good movie.

Excellent portrayal of family relationships

An excellent portrayal of a brother and sister coming to terms with their own middle age, and their relationships with each other, their ailing father and other members of the family. A serious film, but lightened by considerable humour, with a great script. I didn't find it slow at all, it engaged me throughout, but perhaps it is targeted at people of a certain age. Superb performances from Linney and Seymour Hoffman.

Not worth the effort

I really like the work of the two leads in this one, but it's really not worth struggling through this movie. Painful. A slight interest in what happened to the characters made me stick it to the end, not without falling asleep during it though! If you want to watch two messed up siblings put their father in a nursing home, this is the one for you.
Well acted but quiet dull!

Can't fault the cast but the story/script, dealing with a very dull subject matter, doesn't catch you so it ends up being a long 2 hours. Really can't say i enjoyed it and can;t recommend it.
