Not bad at all, just don't drag this out in front of the kids! Too many characters to keep up with at times who were real people in history I believe but you get past that & can keep watching without having to know who everyone is all the time. Could have been shorter I think but don't let that put you off, I like the good old 90min movie! Put this on your list at medium & you will be pleasantly surprised. Don't rent if you don't like costume heavy drama & it's not as raunchy as it's made out!

3.5 out of 10 Not for kids!
Mark from Galway, 27 Aug 2008
Bad language, very bad. Debauchery abounds. Depp is excellent as is Malchovich. Not for anyone who is easily offended or even quite easily offended. I couldn't say that it was enjoyable yet at the same time it was interesting and strangely compelling.

3 out of 10 Well written...
Fergal from Dublin, 15 Sep 2008
Well written and acted but couldn't get into it. A bit drab or I was I just a bit hungover - tried it 3 times... never got to the end [and i was only hungover the first time]. Quiet grainy and dark [deliberately so] also.

What's it about....
An antidote to the sunny period pieces adopted from Jane Austen, which feature impeccably coiffed aristocracy engage in the witty banter of drawing room dramas and culminate in a most delightful denouement, 'The Libertine' highlights the underbelly of the Britocracy of centuries past. Adapted from the play by Stephen Jeffreys, the plot follows the dastardly debauchery of the Earl of Rochester (a mischievous Johnny Depp). A hedonist who makes Oscar Wilde seem moralistic, the...
