Rather spend the evening with a sheep dog!
Anthony from Dublin, 22 Aug 2007
This is awful self indulgent rubbish by Robert DeNiro, stick to the acting Rob! I never thought I would say this but Angelina Jolie puts in a great performance and his very plausible. I never thought I would say this but Matt Damon was awful, Baldwin could have phoned it in, Timothy Hutton should hang is head in shame. Don't know what it was about really, i.e. It was pointless and a very very long pointless at that. Have a night out with a sheep dog, or a sheep, either would beat this Baa hhhh

Clandestine

Slow, deliberate and intruiging, this is a movie that deserves your full attention and will reward those who grant that. It is an insight into the underbelly of the CIA - from its formative years out of WWII to the failed Bay of Pigs in Cuba. We are delved into their world, and it is a world of lies and tactics where the men who really control the fate of the world ply their clandestine trade. Believable acting all round, with Jolie putting in a fine supporting role. Not for everyone though.

Well worth watching.

Based loosely on the history of the CIA, this film follows Edward Wilson's career in the CIA, from his membership of the Skull and Bones Society at Yale, through to the Bay of Pigs fiasco. While his intentions are good, we see him become increasingly paranoid and distrustful. There is very little violence in the film and the violent scenes are all the more chilling for it. Well worth watching. The only complaint I would have is that at some 2.5 hours long, the film could have been a bit shorter

Intersting if overlong...

A dense bastardization of several stories from the early days of the CIA - a re-imagining if you will - it's interesting enough. That being said, little happens for much of it and it's very long.
The main positives of this film come in the tense imaginings of real life events - partially rooted in fact. It's worth a go but I would recommend a book called 'The Company' by Robert Littell for a better stab at this kind of concept. Perhaps Mr De Niro should have read it...

The Alright Shepherd

This film was just a little more than ok. Matt Damon gave a great performance but looked far too youthful for the role he was playing & I also didn't buy the guy playing his son as the character he was supposed to be - I think he was miscast. It can also be a bit confusing at times, but then again it is an espionage film & should maintain an air of mystery. The performances were good & the film was well-made, so It's worth a look, but it won't blow your socks off.
