1.5 out of 10 A Compass With No Direction
Les from Dublin, 02 Jun 2008
I was looking forward to this movie, after hearing about it just before Christmas but, oh, how disappointing it was. Ok, I know it was as kids' film, but most film makers cater for adults as well. Sadly, this didn't hold my attention. I couldn't relate to the characters at all; they just weren't believable. The end was a huge anti-climax, except that it very pointedly left the whole plot open for the sequel. I understand that this film had two changes of director during the make. It shows!

3.5 out of 10 The Golden Compass
Martin from Kerry, 01 Dec 2008
This feels like it could have been more. At the beginning it feels that you've come into the movie late and just as you get a handle on what it's about it ends seemingly in the middle of the story. It is good when its good though. Characters and story are good, it became quite interesting and held the attention to the end. The effects look like special effects though but I would certainly watch a sequel, which is praise. I did leave wanting a little more.

3.5 out of 10 compass
Colette from Kilkenny, 09 Jun 2008
This is a fantasy film. probebly more for kids although it has quite a dark element to it too. i thought this film was pretty good. i read all three books and found them slightly confusing so the film adaptation of the first book actually made the story clearer. the special effects are good. The main girl actress is great. Nicole kidman is perfectly cast as a cold bitch (probebly didn't need to prepare too much for the role).

2.5 out of 10 Watchable
Ciaran from Dublin, 24 Aug 2008
Should say' based upon the novel Northern Lights' on the cover somewhere as this is a very loose adaptation of Pullman's great book. The movie-makers have taken it upon themselves to veer wildly from the book inplaces and this did not benefit the movie for me. Maybe the story is not ideal for the screen but whatever it is we ended up with a watchable film when we could have had a great one.

1.5 out of 10 Boring
Elisa from Cork, 27 Aug 2008
Extremely disappointed! Although the special effects are great, the movie is pretty boring. There is no heart; the events seem to follow one another without much logic beside the fat that they need to happen as for the script. No suspense, no tension. Both David and Nicole performance are pretty poor. They look good and they are well dress but their acting is terrible.

What's it about....
Based on author Philip Pullman's bestselling and award-winning novel, The Golden Compass tells the first story in Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy. The Golden Compass is an exciting fantasy adventure, set in an alternative world where people's souls manifest themselves as animals, talking bears fight wars, and Gyptians and witches co-exist. At the center of the story is Lyra, a 12-year-old girl who starts out trying to rescue a friend who's been kidnapped by a mysterious...
