The first five minutes are from jean-Do's perspective after he wakes up from a coma realising he is paralysed and cant speak...you see the world through his eyes and hear his thoughts and it is truly amazing. remarkably a speech therapist devised a way for Jean Do to communicate and it is this slow and painstaking system of communication that led him to dictate his book "the diving bell and the Butterfly" chronicalling his life and his experiences with locked in syndrome. A truly amazing Movie

Excellent movie - but not for the faint hearted. Watch out for the reversal of lover and wife. John Doe's wife in real life rarely visited him in hospital while his mistress stayed by his bed side. This was reversed in the movie as his wife owns the rights to book and film. Roman Polanski's wife plays fictional wife too - interesting choice of actress. While director's wife plays speech therapist. This film makes you appreciate the small things and though dark, it is uplifting too...

Great not-like-your-ordinary movie

I thought this movie was great! The unbelievably tough situation for any family. I think it was very inspiring when main character had a visit from person who gave him a very wise and simple advise. You need to see a movie though to know what it was. It so worth it.
Go ahead and rent it. IT'S GREAT and INSPIRING and it reminds you of things in life that you maybe taking for granted and you should cherish every moment of it, cause it could be your last time you enjoy it fully!

Excellent movie

Very bravely filmed through the eyes of a man paralysed by stroke, something a hollywood movie couldn't have achieved. It helps you put yourself in his shoes, with some heartbreaking moments, some very hard to watch scenes, and surprisingly lots of funny moments as well as Jean Bauby didn't lose his sense of humour. Amazing that the story is taken from a book painstakingly dictated by the blinking of his eye. Highly recommended

Locked-in

This is a movie that does a god job at what it is - a faithful interpretation of a book that captures the feel and heart from the book while still being a good movie in its own right. For those who have read the book, this just serves as a view as to how a good movie-maker brings the story to the screen. For those new to the tale, this is a heartfelt story and makes you appreciate the things you have in your own life.
