Intriguing and watchable, but flawed.

Mel Gibson is really excellent in this and as a black comedy it would have worked really well. Unfortunately the tone of the movie is uneven and the direction misguided at times . The acting is generally of a high standard but the teenage characters are implausable and their story detracts from the central idea. The last 20 minutes or so seem to be from a different movie almost, where the issue of Mel Gibsons characters' mental health takes us rather implausably from horror to happy ending in an unsatisfactory and cack handed way leaving a bit of a bad taste in the mouth. It's still worth watching though for the Mel Gibson/Beaver double act which is brilliant.

Terrific

When this arrived in the post my heart sank. I wasn't looking forward to it and only put it on my list because it was recommended in some paper. That said I really enjoyed it. Mel Gibson for all his personal problems in brilliant. Jodie Foster is as always superb. The story is gripping. The whole puppet is so believable that you just take it for granted that a man in Mel Gibson's position would choose to use one.
It's a brilliant film.
Great film!

Thought provoking and sensitively handled.
