4 out of 10 Very enjoyable
Barra from Cork, 01 Feb 2010
I rented this film because the previous two reviews were so scathing I thought it couldn't be that bad! And personally I really enjoyed it. It's a refreshing change from the norm, very funny in places and has a surprisingly touching love story. It is very abstract, especially towards the end where it becomes dowright wacky in places, but it remains entertaining and accessible throughout, even if some scenes and narrative are 'puzzling'. If you're in the mood for a superbly acted and directed fil

2 out of 10 Stoned Love.
Daza from Dublin, 28 Apr 2010
This is hard work. When everyone starts playing everyone and then characters start falling in love with real people and vice versa. You needed to be really stoned to follow this to the end. Certainly the guy who wrote it was banjo-ed. I forget how it ended. Really like PS Hoff. Even in this. He likes the ones that are out there. Worth a go if you've nothing else to do.

1 out of 10 Brought a tear to my eye
Germaine from Dublin, 10 Aug 2010
Non-linear plots often need more participation from the viewer, which I enjoy, but this film is just one too many steps beyond the pale. Great if you get all the references, e.g. Cotard delusion, but rather shallow and pointless if you don’t. PSH’s performance is convincing, I just didn’t care enough about him or any of the characters by the end of it all.

2.5 out of 10 Dense, weird but interesting
Michelle from Galway, 30 Sep 2010
I thought this film started out quite promising but ultimately got a bit lost in itself. One of the strangest movies I have seen recently, at times I found it impenetrable. I have to say that the characters have stayed with me though, so it must have something going for it. Philip Seymour Hoffman is brilliant as always, but a bit too weird for my taste.

0.5 out of 10 I want my time back
Jennifer from Dublin, 04 Dec 2009
Charlie Kaufman just stole 2 hours of my life, I want it back. What a load of meandering, self-indulgent, introspective rubblish, just die already...... It gets a rating of 1 because there is no facility for a minus rating

What's it about....
Obsession and identity are recurring themes in screenwriter Charlie Kaufman's work, and he draws on them again in his directorial debut, SYNECDOCHE, NEW YORK. Kaufman's film focuses on the wiles of Caden Cotard (Philip Seymour Hoffman), a regional theatre director who has won a MacArthur grant to help produce his next project. Cotard's artist wife, Adele Lack (Catherine Keener), subsequently departs with their daughter to Berlin, and he begins a flirtation with box office...
