How can a biopic about Dylan be conventional?
Lynne from Dublin, 19 Aug 2010
Most people who criticize this film expected a biopic about Bob Dylan to be like "Walk the Line" or "The Doors", but honestly the life and essence of Bob Dylan is not straightforward or conventional. Bob Dylan's persona was ever changing and continues to change to this day, which is what this film tries to point out. Cate Blanchett's performance as a drugged up rock star/beatnik phase of Dylan's life is truly amazing, while Richard Gere's performance as a rough and out traveller highlights Dylan

A mess

Bob Dylan is an oddball, and also a genius. But trying to 'pin him down' was pointless in the '60s and is pointless now. Dylan doesn't want us to know who he is. He just wants his work to be heard.
This movie uses different characters, none of whom are named Bob, to portray different phases of his life - Blanchett (superb) covers the 'Don't Look Back' / Newport Festival era, Bale for the motorbike accident / Christian conversion episode etc.
The director presents each of these incarnatio

Unusual

It helps if you know something about Bob Dylan before watching this film but it isn't essential. Six different characters (portrayed by six different actors) embody different aspects of Dylan's work and life. They're all equally good.
This film borders on the fantastical sometimes, visually it is great and some of the performances are nothing short of spectacular. It's not your usual Friday night in film. But give it a go with an open mind and I'm sure you'll like it.

Bizarre, Boring.

This movie was so disappointing, dull, bland, boring. Yes, Cate Blanchett is incredible, and how great to see a woman play a male character, but she isn't featured enough and even if she was I doubt it would save this film! Its all a bit bizarre, especially Richard Gere's character, I'm not sure what the point of him being there was, or even of what decade he was meant to be in! Give it a miss.
Excellent performance from Cate Blanchett

I enjoyed this film. As long as you know that all the different key characters are meant to be Dylan, then I don't think it's confusing. I didn't understand all the various allusions, as I don't know enough about Dylan, but I found the different portrayals of Dylan very interesting. Casting Cate Blanchett as Dylan was an inspired decision. She is outstanding.
