4 out of 10 Tuff going but worth It.
Peter from Cork, 15 Jan 2010
This is unlike any film you have ever seen. It was made by an artist Steve McQueen. I saw it at its Irish premier at the Cork Film Festival last year and was lucky enough to sit in on a Q & A with the two lead actors directly after the film. Both actors approached the film almost in the same way they would approach a stage play ie rehearse each seen over and over then play in front of the camera. In fact the 10 min scene between Sands and the preist was shot in one take the two actors having reh

3 out of 10 Worth a watch

Harrowing story about one man's determination not to give up no matter what the cost in pursuit of his ideals and cause, it is a powerful movie and full marks to the actor to take his trade so seriously as shown in this portrayal. There is very little back ground to the story but I suppose they assume that most people woudl have an understanding behind it and very little dialogue but I think it works in this instance.

5 out of 10 Hunger

The story of the Hunger Strikers & the death of Bobby Sands. It is not a history lesson & you don't come away with any real understanding of the motivation of Bobby Sands. However it did leave me amazed and in a strange way uplifted by this man for whome giving up simply was'nt an option - when there was nothing left except the will to keep going. Extraordinary!

4 out of 10 Interesting
Brian from Louth, 16 Mar 2009
Artful movie with some great scenes. The scarcity of dialogue throughout is contrasted in one fascinating scene & one long take where Sands & a priest discuss his decision to hunger strike. This & other scenes do not lead to easy conclusions & it is ambiguous about whether it is heroism or self-mythologising delusion that we are witnessing. Worth a look!

3.5 out of 10 HARROWING!!!
Therese from Dublin, 18 Mar 2009
Really good portrail of the dirty campaign and what the prisoners had done to them on a daily basis. While the situation in the North was known globally the film does'nt really give finer details of the campaign and of Bobby Sands. It would have helped for the film to let the viewer know of the political situation and why this campaign went on.
