4.5 out of 10 Feelgood and highly watchable
Cathy from Kildare, 03 Mar 2009
A truly lovely tragicomedy from Germany, a political love-story with nods to Washington Irving's Rip Van Winkle this movie is both heartwarming and sad, amusing and educational. Most of the humour stems from "Ostalgie," the paradoxical nostalgia for life under the socialist system, but it is surprisingly accessible, and creation of an increasingly complex fake world to hide the reality of reunification is bittersweet as it reveals the ideal Germany that East Berliners would have wished for...

4 out of 10 A gem...
Kieran from Limerick, 08 May 2010
Heard about this one back when it came out but never got around to seeing it. Just saw it when browsing through screenclick catalog and I am very glad I did. This film is a great example of what is missing in a lot of Hollywood titles, soul. Beautifully shot and well acted, this quirky tale will have you looking for more from this team.

5 out of 10 East Germanys worth a visit.
paul from Cork, 06 May 2009
A complete joy from start to finish. It's both funny & sad in equal measure & recreates those 2 years of huge social & political change in the former East Germany perfectly. A coming of age story for both the young man & the nation.

4 out of 10 Very Enjoyable
Mark from Dublin, 12 Nov 2010
Highly recommend this story set around the downfall of the communist regime in East Germany and the following events, thought provoking, humour and sadness but overall an enjoyable movie with a good story.

4 out of 10 For anyone who thinks Germans have no sense of fun
Caroline from Dublin, 22 May 2008
This is the film to change your perceptions about the German lack of humour. Very funny film! There are some in-jokes, but in general this is accessible and a good laugh. Daniel Bruehl really shines.

What's it about....
The year is 1989 and East and West Germany are still divided. Alex (Daniel Brühl) and his sister Ariane (Maria Simon) live in East Germany with their single mother, Christiane (Katrin Sass) who is a staunch Socialist. When Alex's mother witnesses his arrest on a protest march, she suffers a heart attack and falls into a coma for eight months, just enough time for the Berlin wall to come tumbling down along with all of East Germany's ideals. Eight months later, Christiane...
