Charlie Did it Excellent

Is the big banner in the background in the opening scene and he certainly does in this movie, Hanks is brilliant in this role almost comical in parts Roberts delivers a good supportign role but the show is stolen totally by the dry humoured foul mouthed hard hitting cia agent played by Hoffman excellent film and wins my best movie so far this year, it also establishes the beginning of the Taliban and what was to lead too 9/11 when the Americans turned there back on Afghanistan at the end

Okay, but not great

With such a wealth of acting talent at his disposal, Mike Nichols should probably have made a much more engaging film. It's decent, with Philip Seymour Hoffman providing the stand-out turn, but it doesn't quite grab you. It also feels a bit false to praise Charlie Wilson for helping the muhajudeen (I know I've spelled that wrong) to beat the Russians, but failing to mention that the arms he provided were then used to set up Al Q'aeda and ultimately attack America.

Good

Interesting film of how U.S. funded the Afghan Mujahideen against the Russians, though maybe too revisionist in its portrayal of the likes of General Zia al-Huq of Pakistan: could be subtitled "right-wing zealots are fun guys too!" Still it's worth watching to see how politics in the U.S. works and also to see how the Americans saw off the Soviets, but (yet again)lost the ensuing peace.
Excellent

A very entertaining piece in which Hoffman steals every scene he is in. Hanks plays this role so well also and with a sharp script by The West Wings's creater Sorkin, it all adds up to a very fine piece of entertainment. Roberts is probably the only weak link but she is not so prominent so dont worry too much about that. Enjoy.
Charlie Wilson's War

Great movie, another captivating performance from Seymour Hoffman, with Hanks his usual solid self. My only criticism with Charlie Wilson's War was one action segment in the middle featuring Russian pilots which I felt didn't work. The documentary is also well worth watching for it's input from the actual Charlie Wilson
