2.5 out of 10 Quite Interesting

Saw this many many years ago and did not know who she was at the time. Found the film very watchable but sometimes a little explicit at times but it's a true story so some gory details will come out. Having said that, it's a very engaging film and I would watch it again.

Oh, I just loved this little gem! You may not have the patience for such an insightful, sensitive, refreshing and enlightening film. I found myself 'googling' the subject's poetry and writings. You shouldn't miss this true-life story - one in a million.

I enjoyed this movie. It's beautifully shot and really well acted. However, it does require patience and isn't exactly a bundle of laughs. If you like Mike Leigh movies this could be for you.

I was disappointed with this film - too slow moving - lost interest fairly early on in the film.

What's it about....
This sprawling, detailed film by Jane Campion tells the true story of Janet Frame, a painfully sensitive girl who managed to escape a dreary rural upbringing and eight years in a mental hospital to become New Zealand's premier poet. The film unfolds as a trilogy, with each section based on a different Frame autobiography. "To the Is-Land" chronicles her childhood and awkward teenage years. "An Angel at My Table" focuses on her time as a teacher and her horrifying mental institution...
