a sheer brilliant movie.don't let this one escape a viewing.my
husband really didn't want to watch this one,but after said he was
really glad he did.i've always considered russell crowe's best ever
performance to be romper stomper.his role in american gangster
is equal.i've never actually seen denzel washington give anything
but pure class and as usual he does it again.just choose this one and
sit back and enjoy.

A black Godfather

Well maybe not entirely up there with Coppolas epics but this a good old fashioned organised crime epic in the same vein as Goodfellas, Casino, Once Upon a time in America or The Departed, albeit this time the gangsers is a ruthless black man played brilliantly by Denzel Washinton. Russell Crowe is equally excellent as the relatively small town NJ narcotics cop dealin with the corrupt big boys of the NYPD.

Very Good

I really liked this movie but there were a couple of hitches. One, it didnt explain how Frank went from becoming a driver to a heroin dealer and two, Frank/Denzel just seemed too nice (most of the time)to be a heroin dealer. It is slow to start but then i really got into it and was absolutely shocked by the whole industry involved in smuggling and selling. Really enjoyable if a bit gruesome in parts!!!
Impressive!

As far as gangster movies go (and I've seen a few) this has to be up there with some of the best. Washington plays a convincing role and tells the story (with some facts bent to suit hollywood) of one Frank Lucas-hardcore heroin importer for Manhattan in the 70's. Along side Washington stars Russell Crowe-who's got a cool Brooklyn accent!! Not for the kids-but a great gangster movie!
Here's Denzel

Washington effectively plays the bad guy mobster who came from nothing to rule the underworld in this docu-style drama. I say 'docu-style' as the movie is made in such a way that you never get close to any of the characters. Therefore it never draws you in but I believe that was the way they wanted it. Even so, it's a good tale and Denzel, as usual, puts in a fine performance.
